dermaplaning in columbia, md — the good, the bad, the ugly

Dermaplaning is one of our most popular services, whether booked as an add-on or a stand-alone facial treatment. Dermaplaning is one of our favorite treatments to perform for its ability to quickly transform the skin.

What is Dermaplaning? Dermaplaning is a clinical treatment performed using a surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle that is safely and gently moved across the face, removing dead skin cells and vellus hair. Dermaplaning was designed as an exfoliation technique that helps smooth the epidermis by removing the last 21 days of dead skin from the surface, revealing a bright, smooth complexion.

While not the primary purpose, an added benefit to dermaplaning is the removal of the vellus hair, best known as peach fuzz. Removing the vellus hair reveals smoother skin, allows for a smoother canvas for makeup application, allows for stronger product penetration, and assists with younger looking skin. Make no mistake, this technique is far from new… or a trend. Dermaplaning has been used since the 90’s to assist with medical-grade facial procedures.

THE GOOD: Dermaplaning is a relatively quick procedure, most clients are a good candidate, including pregnant and nursing clients.

THE BAD: If a client has active breakout, we cannot dermaplane them until the acne has subsided, to prevent spreading of the C. Acnes bacteria.

THE UGLY: Use of “at-home dermaplaning” kits do not constitute the same result as an in-office procedure. At-home kits are for face shaving and come with more risks, such as cuts on the face and increased probability of breakout due to improper skin prep.

MYTH: Dermaplaning makes hair grow back darker or thicker.

FACT: The only thing that can affect hair growth is hormones. If you do not have any hormonal imbalances, dermaplaning cannot cause hair to grow back darker or thicker. Also, professional dermaplaning differs from traditional shaving because we operate the blade at a 45-degree angle rather than a 90-degree angle like traditional shaving.

MYTH: Dermaplaning is over-exfoliating my skin.

FACT: A licensed professional knows the proper exfoliant to use on your skin to avoid over-exfoliation. When properly done, dermaplaning can be beneficial for even the most reactive skin types.

We offer dermaplaning as an add-on to your facial treatment, as a stand-alone treatment “The Express Dermaplane”, as apart of our “Filterless Facial”, or our favorite added onto a Hydrafacial®.
